Project overview
Vanir is currently providing project and construction management services for Union Sanitary District’s Enhanced Treatment and Site Upgrade (ETSU) program at its wastewater treatment facility in Union City. This is the largest capital improvement program in the District’s history. The wastewater plant serves the communities of Union City, Newark and Fremont.
The ETSU program will renew and replace aging infrastructure and improve water quality in the San Francisco Bay through enhanced wastewater treatment processes and nutrient removal. It will also increase the facility’s resiliency to extreme wet-weather events and climate change. Phase 1A is currently underway and includes:
- Aeration Basin Modifications: A complex sequencing of improvements to existing plant infrastructure, along with new aeration basins, odor control and electrical upgrades designed to improve treatment quality and expand overall capacity. Existing plant volume will be maintained throughout the duration of the project. Vanir provided technical master scheduling services for the aeration basin work.
- Campus Building: New 65,000-square-foot building for administrative offices, District board chambers, laboratory/plant controls and facility maintenance operations. Vanir provided preconstruction technical services (including sustainability advice, owner equipment procurement options, cost estimating, value engineering, scheduling and constructability reviews) and is currently providing on-site construction management support.
The ETSU program will support the next 40 years of reliable and cost-effective service to the three cities.
