Sound Transit Central Link Light Rail

Project overview

As the major subconsultant to Bechtel, Vanir provided construction management services for the construction of 1.4 miles of light railway. The project included:

  • At grade, aerial and transition structures
  • A rail station
  • A light rail vehicle operation and maintenance facility

The scope of the project included major ground improvement work, utility relocations, construction of high-voltage underground transmission lines and work on a congested construction site. The aerial structure crossed Airport Way South, 6th Avenue and the existing BNSF railroad in two places. The southern/eastern limit of the contract interfaced with the Beacon Hill light rail tunnel contract near the intersection of Forest Avenue and Airport Way South.

Critical scheduling for operation and maintenance facility

The operation and maintenance facility, yard and support facilities were schedule-critical, as they were needed to receive commission, test and stable light rail vehicles. The Vanir team employed extensive experience and expertise to work around the complex construction site and ensure the project was completed on schedule.
