New Orleans Charter Science and Mathematics High School

Project overview

New Orleans Public Schools (NOLA) brought the CBRE|Heery|Vanir team onboard to perform program management services for the construction of the New Orleans Charter Science and Mathematics High School (Sci High). Located in the heart of the city, the 129,716-square-foot facility was funded mainly by FEMA grants that were awarded due to Hurricane Katrina.

Our joint venture team was hired seven months into the construction phase and we quickly took measures to address scope creep and minimize potential change orders, reaching substantial completion four months ahead of the baseline completion date.

The new facility includes classrooms, multiple labs (science, visual arts, digital graphics, maker spaces and computers), a gymnasium/auditorium, an outdoor learning and physical education area and dining commons with indoor/outdoor seating.

To say there were challenges with this project would be an understatement. There were many unknown variables discovered during construction and many changes to the project scope. The project moved steadily forward as difficult issues emerged; however, the team kept Orleans Parish School Board (now New Orleans Public Schools) aware of the project status on a regular basis. We are very pleased with the results…
