Marina Middle School

Project overview

Vanir provided project and construction management services for the modernization and reconstruction of Marina Middle School, which was originally constructed in 1936 and designed by the acclaimed architecture duo of George Kelham and William Day.

The project included:

  • New floors, ceiling, lighting, doors and hardware
  • Complete renovation of the existing kitchen and serving spaces
  • Infrastructure upgrades, fire/life safety upgrades and ADA compliance
  • Hazardous material/asbestos/lead and soils remediation
  • Site improvements and existing interim housing removal

Overcoming challenges

Initially six phases, the project faced significant delays due to the urgent need for a new classroom building at the nearby Tule Elk Elementary School. To facilitate the school’s construction, its operations were temporarily shifted to portable classrooms, set up in Marina’s designated play yard. This overlap required extensive coordination and eventually led to the postponement and modification of the play yard’s renovation plans. Ultimately, the play yard renovations were separated from the main project and completed as an independent initiative after the school returned to its permanent location. This adjustment allowed the modernization of Marina to proceed on schedule, culminating in the completion of a newly renovated play yard.
