Project overview
As the construction manager for Lubbock County Jail — the largest jail ever constructed in West Texas — Vanir delivered a high-tech facility that houses approximately 1,500 inmates with the ability to accommodate up to 2,000. The two-story administration building is accompanied by six single-level and mezzanine cell clusters. The project also included an 8,000-square-foot central plant/warehouse building.
The jail incorporated the latest in detention technology:
- A video visitation system allows arraignment to be done via video; attorneys can communicate with clients from their offices
- The HVAC systems are controlled by an Energy Management System
- All doors are controlled using touch screen technology
- The roofing system is a spray polyurethane foam — it is lightweight, seamless, easy to repair and adds insulation value to the roof
Vanir’s early assistance saved cost…and time
We began by attending design meetings in June 2003 until completion of design. Our estimates were done at 100% Schematic Design, 50% Construction Documents (CDs) and 100% CDs. At 90% CDs, a complete constructability review was conducted, resulting in more than 1,500 comments. These measures minimized time delays, change orders and potential cost impacts.
