John J. Benoit Detention Center

Project overview

Located on a 6.5-acre site, the John J. Benoit Detention Center consists of a new 600,000-square-foot, Type II detention center to replace and expand the existing Indio Jail for the County of Riverside Sheriff’s Department.

Vanir is providing program and construction management services for the two-phase project. Phase I consists of building a three-story support facility and a four-story, 1,626-bed housing structure. Phase II includes the demolition of the existing jail, construction of a sally port, and landscaping of the grounds. Sheriff’s staff and inmates will relocate to the new facility over a three-month time period between phases I and II.

A significant undertaking

The new center is the largest project that the County of Riverside has ever constructed. Construction will span 1,170 calendar days over four summers.

The County is seeking LEED Silver certification for the new center.
