Highline Public Schools – Des Moines Elementary School

Project overview

Phase I of Highline Public Schools’ 2016 Capital Bond Improvement Program started in March 2017 and will be completed in October 2021. Vanir is serving as the program manager and has successfully delivered three of four schools.

One project in the program is the new Des Moines Elementary School, a 700-student, K-5 school located on a 17-acre site. For this project, Vanir served as the project manager and construction manager. It was delivered within budget and on time for the 2019/2020 school year.

The project met exceptional quality standards and sustainability goals, which included compliance with the Washington Sustainable Schools Protocol (WSSP).

Meeting the challenges of impacted wetlands

Des Moines Elementary School was constructed on a sloping site with wetlands and environmental permitting requirements that were addressed in the planning and design stages and required approval from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Vanir was instrumental in obtaining approval from the Army Corps in less than six months.
