Project overview
With a 14-year partnership with the County of San Diego Department of General Services, Vanir was selected to provide construction management services for the two-phased LEED Gold certified, energy-efficient Youth Transition Campus (YTC) that replaced the outdated Kearny Mesa Juvenile Detention Facility. The YTC serves as a national model, providing trauma-informed services and programs to rehabilitate co-ed youth for community reintegration. With capacity for 168 youth residents and 300 staff, it offers medical, dental and mental health services; a recreational courtyard with basketball and handball courts, garden and an Olympic-sized running track; an indoor gymnasium; a dining facility equipped with a state-of-the-art culinary arts kitchen; an academic complex offering career technical education courses; and a dedicated Youth Development Center for administrative and community-based services provided by the Probation Department.
Through careful and detailed coordination and despite the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the project team met the County’s aggressive schedule for Phase I, and reached substantial completion for both phases in December 2023.
