Contra Costa County Administration Building and Jail Demolition and Redevelopment Project

Project overview

Vanir is providing project and construction management services for the demolition of Contra Costa County’s old administration building and jail. This project will also include the construction of a new satellite administration building and public plaza area, continuing the County’s development goals of creating one unified civic campus and enhancing the downtown area along Pine and Escobar Streets.

  • Satellite Administration Building: The three-story, 65,000-square-foot satellite administration building will house various County departments and include a café on the first level and a parking garage with 74 spaces. Designed to achieve Total Resource Use and Efficiency (TRUE) and LEED Gold certifications, the project will achieve 90% waste reduction through reuse and recycling strategies, such as reusing marble and wood paneling from the existing administration building.
  • Public Plaza: The 25,000-square-foot public plaza will include a series of outdoor spaces to enhance the downtown atmosphere and promote the well-being of employees and visitors.

A TRUE honor

The project became the first government construction project in the world to achieve TRUE precertification in November 2022. Administered by Green Business Certification Inc., the TRUE program encourages the adoption
of sustainable resource management and waste reduction practices that contribute to positive environmental, health and economic outcomes. Project completion is scheduled for the second quarter of 2024, at which time the project will become eligible for full TRUE certification.
