Community Health Care – School-based Health Center at Bethel Middle School

Project overview

Vanir provided project and construction management services for Community Health Care’s first school-based health center. Located at Bethel Middle School in Spanaway, Washington, it is a full-spectrum integrated health center serving the students and staff of the Bethel School District. The center is located in a converted classroom and includes two medical exam rooms, two dental operatories, three offices, a laboratory, a reception area and sterilization and medication rooms. Approximately 3,500 students will have immediate access to primary healthcare services.

According to the Washington School-Based Health Alliance, school-based health centers have been linked to better attendance, better grades and decreased emergency department use and hospital admissions. The District was awarded a three-year start-up grant by Kaiser Permanente and the center, which is being run by nonprofit Community Health Care, uses a sliding pay scale and won’t turn any student away.
