Project overview
Vanir served as the owner’s representative for the Pueblo County Detention Center, providing planning, program, and construction services. As the first net zero detention facility in the U.S., Vanir led a collaborative process that required extensive coordination with the County, City, design team, contractor, and local utility companies to achieve the County Board of Commissioners’ goal.
Consisting of a 672-bed, two-level housing unit with support space (kitchen, laundry, medical, mental health, property, and administrative services), the facility can accommodate expansion of up to 1,000 beds. The project also includes the Sheriff’s Office training space, extensive site work, secure parking, and abatement/demolition of the existing detention tower. Designed to maximize security while minimizing staffing requirements, the facility utilizes electronic security and surveillance systems.
This project required close coordination with the County, City, and adjacent property owners due to the property annexation, platting requirements, and the Medal of Honor Boulevard Extension project occurring in conjunction with the detention facility.
