Santa Monica College Math and Science Building

Project overview

Vanir provided program and construction management services for Santa Monica College’s (SMC) new Math and Science Building. This project is part of Santa Monica Community College District’s $345 million Measure V Capital Improvements Bond Program to meet the evolving needs of the community and its students.

The LEED Gold certified Math and Science Building is one of a kind. It was architecturally inspired by SMC’s historic 1929 clock tower, which is located in a newly designed plaza adjacent to this project. Complementing SMC’s renowned science programs, the building features:

  • 26 interactive classrooms and computer lab areas
  • 15 laboratories (math, geospatial, geography, archeology, physical anthropology, anatomy with cadaver cold storage room, genetics, chemistry, physics, geology, and astronomy)
  • A planetarium and rooftop observatory
  • Office and support spaces for faculty
  • Spaces filled with natural light where students and faculty can study and collaborate

Vanir provided end-to-end program management across all phases, deploying advanced schedule forensics, including a “reverse” time impact analysis to defend the owner against deluge system delay claims. Supporting informed resolution and claim mitigation, Vanir also led a technical investigation and risk analysis of defective channel glass failures affecting the building’s glazing system.
