Project overview
Vanir provided construction management services for Phase I of the County of San Diego’s Youth Transition Campus. Part of a multi-phase project targeting LEED Gold certification, the 140,000-square-foot campus replaces the 1950’s-era Kearny Mesa Juvenile Detention Facility. It has adopted a more therapeutic and less punitive approach, focusing on providing supportive, trauma-informed services to help rehabilitate co-ed youth and prepare them to reintegrate back into the community.
The campus consists of support facilities and eight home-like living units (four housing buildings), with an overall total capacity for 96 youth residents. Along with medical, mental health, dental and vision services, it offers academic and career technical education, where youth residents learn trades such as plumbing, culinary arts, media arts and information technology. The campus includes indoor/outdoor recreation space, intake and release processing, a dining center, a visitation center, a maintenance warehouse and a central plant.
Vanir has served the County for the past 12 years and is providing construction management services for the next phase of this project.
