California Science Center
Los Angeles, CA

A Story of Success
Vanir's construction management services led to the successful delivery of a state-of-the-art museum, now known as the California Science Center. The project included renovating the existing California Museum of Science and Industry and expanding it to into one of the largest science learning facilities in the country.

The science center is a three-story structure incorporating the restored historic facade of the original Ahmanson Building. The facility houses an IMAX 3D theater with one of the largest screens on the West Coast.

The new facility is one of the area's most attended attractions and provides curriculum-based learning sessions for over twenty-thousand students each year.

Making it Happen
The project was designed and constructed under the direction of the State Architect with Vanir providing full project and construction management services. The project faced several challenges: funding was intertwined with the state seismic retrofit program; sensitivity for historic preservation was essential; local contracts and work forces were of high importance; and timely completion was required to minimize the loss of the science venue during construction. We were successful in resolving all the issues, and the project was completed in record time.
