Successful Design-Build Delivery
The success of the new juvenile justice center can be attributed to the true synergy of a
dedicated project team led by Vanir/Cornerstone.
Situated on a 17-acre site, this 360-bed, state-of-the-art facility includes a five
courtroom building plus medical and dental facilities. Public defenders, district attorneys
and other officials have efficient on-campus offices within the center.
Sustainable Design, LEED Gold Certification
The justice center was built with the latest in green building technology and achieved a
LEED Gold Certification, making it the first juvenile detention center in the nation with
this status. Several major systems contribute to the sustainable design and certification:
An 850-kilowatt solar system will supply more than 60 percent of the building's energy needs.
Water-efficient plumbing fixtures and native land-scaping and irrigation technology were implemented, saving an estimated 7 million gallons of water annually.
During construction, we ensured that waste was recycled and diverted from landfill disposal, including 3,000 tons of crushed rock and 600 tons of glass, aluminum and plastics.
Materials used inside the center (paints, carpet, wood, etc.) are free of pollutants or have low VOC emissions.
Award Winning Project!
The justice center won the 2007 National Design-Build Institute of America Excellence Award
for Public Sector Buildings over $15 million dollars. The CMAA Northern California Chapter
also awarded the project the 2008 Project of the Year in the Building Category for projects
over $20 million
