State of California, Department of Mental Health /
Coalinga State Hospital
Coalinga, CA
Description of a Successful Project
Vanir provided project and construction management services for the new Coalinga
State Hospital. This was the single largest general building construction contract
awarded by the State of California at the time, and is widely considered to be the
most successful project undertaken by the State's Project Management Branch of the
Department of General Services Real Estate Services Division. This project was
delivered using a traditional design/bid/build method.
The Acute Care Psychiatric Hospital houses repeat sexual offenders who have been
committed for health treatment under California's Sexually Violent Predator (SVP) law.
The facility provides housing and treatment for 1,500 patients and employs
approximately 2,000 staff members.
Overcoming Challenges
The site selection was the earliest challenge faced. No community wanted this facility
in their 'backyard.' The architect team needed to create a design that could be built
on any site. Vanir assisted with educating the community in understanding the benefits
of this type of facility.
Effective Cost Control
As a result of Vanir's change order management through monitoring daily work
activities and verifying all material invoices, the change order savings to the owner
was approximately $3 million dollars.
